We recently hosted a series of dynamic engagements with Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR), Public Service International (PSI) and The Centre for International Corporate Tax Accountability and Research (CICTAR) to strengthen our efforts in organizing private sector healthcare workers. Here’s a lrecap of the activities:

๐ƒ๐š๐ฒ ๐Ÿ: We kicked off with a warm and welcoming dinner, creating a vibrant, collaborative atmosphere among KMPDU national leaders, the Nairobi Branch Executive, and our esteemed guests. It was a perfect start to set the stage for fruitful discussions ahead. Additionally, we toured the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), which added a significant and insightful dimension to the day’s activities.

๐ƒ๐š๐ฒ ๐Ÿ: Our day began with an insightful visit to the Kenya National Union of Medical Laboratory Officers (KNUMLO), where we explored joint strategies for organizing the private sector. CIR shared their winning tactics, while PSI offered invaluable support to tackle challenges such as financial constraints and lack of recognition agreements. It was a day filled with strategic brainstorming and mutual learning.

๐ƒ๐š๐ฒ ๐Ÿ‘: At the County Liaison Officers/Organizing Secretaries Workshop, I emphasized the importance of learning from our distinguished guests to enhance our private sector organizing. CIR delivered engaging presentations on communication strategies and organizing fundamentals, while experts shared crucial insights on Kenyan labor laws and impactful campaigns. We also dedicated time to discuss the implementation matrix of RTWF, reinforcing our commitment to actionable plans and tangible progress.

๐ƒ๐š๐ฒ ๐Ÿ’: The Healthcare Workers Unions in Kenya Workshop was a highlight, bringing together participants from various unions. We zeroed in on collaborative strategies, with CIR leading training sessions on communication and organizing. Discussions on the impact of private equity on healthcare added depth to the day’s agenda. The spirit of unity and shared purpose was truly inspiring. We also had a meeting with the management at Nairobi Hospital, we emphasized the significance of organized efforts in not only advocating for the rights and well-being of healthcare workers but also in enhancing the overall efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare delivery. We discussed practical steps for fostering a more collaborative relationship between the hospital management and healthcare unions, aiming to create a work environment that promotes employee satisfaction and patient care excellence.

๐ƒ๐š๐ฒ ๐Ÿ“: The Private Sector Workshop took a deep dive into organizing strategies. We compared organizational structures, debriefed on the recent strike, and delved into the role of Development Finance Institutions in private healthcare. The discussions were robust, and the insights gained were invaluable. These sessions concluded with a strong consensus on integrating research and organizing for evidence-based advocacy. We’re committed to ongoing collaboration, comprehensive training, and expanding our research initiatives to fortify our union efforts and are excited about future collaborative ventures that will drive growth and development in our sector.
