Today we joined the Nyamira Doctors Solidarity meeting, and the frustration is palpable, from this meeting with the dedicated doctors of Nyamira County, several pressing healthcare concerns came to light that demand our attention:
1๏ธโฃ Prolonged Probation: Doctors are stuck in limbo, facing extended probation periods that hinder their career progress. This stagnation doesn’t just affect them; it affects the quality of care we receive.
2๏ธโฃ Promotion Stagnation: Both consultants and doctors have seen no promotions for over eight years, which is demotivating and detrimental to their professional growth. A healthcare system relies on motivated professionals.
3๏ธโฃ Severe Shortage: Nyamira County faces an alarming shortage of medical professionals. With only 30 doctors serving over 650,000 residents, the strain on our healthcare system is overwhelming. This affects the timely and quality delivery of healthcare services.
4๏ธโฃ Lack of Compliance: The County Government’s failure to uphold the RTBU (Return to Work Formula) of 2021 and a court order from the same year is a matter of grave concern. It reflects a lack of commitment to resolving these pressing issues.
To address these challenges, the doctors’ union has issued a 21-day strike notice, set to expire on September 25, 2023. This decision is not taken lightly but is a necessary step to demand the rights, respect, and resources that our doctors and the people they serve rightfully deserve.
We firmly believe that strike actions, industrial boycotts, and demonstrations are not just tools of negotiation; they are fundamental pillars of collective bargaining and constitutional rights.
