In a testament to effective dialogue and collaboration, KMPDU (Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists’ Union) national and Upper Eastern Branch leaders engaged in crucial discussions with the Governor of Embu. These discussions aimed to address pressing matters that had led to a strike by Embu doctors, commencing on January 10, 2024. We are pleased to report that, through a week-long bi-partisan committee engagement, a consensus was reached, leading to the official conclusion of the strike.
The outcomes of these talks were encapsulated in a final report and Return to Work Formula (RTWF), both of which have been formally signed by representatives from both KMPDU and Embu County. As a crucial next step, these documents are set to be deposited in court as a consent agreement, cementing the commitment of all parties involved.
The comprehensive bi-partisan report meticulously outlines the agreed-upon resolutions for each of the issues raised during the negotiations, complete with stipulated timelines for their implementation. The resolutions cover critical aspects including the promotion of doctors to their rightful job groups, the conversion of contractual engagements to Permanent and Pensionable (PnP) status, the crucial employment of additional doctors, the prompt payment of statutory deductions, and the remittance of union dues.
KMPDU extends its gratitude to the doctors of Embu for their unwavering solidarity, recognizing that their collective strength and commitment were instrumental in securing positive outcomes. The unity among healthcare professionals remains a cornerstone in delivering impactful results for our members.
As the strike is officially called off, this achievement highlights the potential for constructive dialogue and collaboration between doctors and government bodies. It underscores the importance of addressing systemic issues to ensure the well-being of healthcare professionals, ultimately contributing to the enhancement of the healthcare system as a whole.
Long live the Union!
