Health Unions Call for Urgent Action Amid Kiambu Crisis

NAIROBI: Sep 30, 2025

Kenya’s umbrella of health unions, including KMPDU, is calling for immediate government intervention to address ongoing challenges facing healthcare workers, with a particular focus on Kiambu County.

The unions are demanding urgent action on several critical fronts:

  • UHC Staff Absorption: Many counties have yet to issue permanent and pensionable letters, despite harmonized salaries under the national framework.

  • Career Guidelines: The Council of Governors is interfering with Public Service Commission directives, undermining career progression and professional stability.

  • Remuneration: Full SRC-reviewed pay structures remain pending in several counties, leaving healthcare workers inadequately compensated for their service.

Kiambu County has emerged as a flashpoint. Salaries are delayed, promotions stalled, and medical cover is inadequate. Union deductions have been stopped unilaterally, and workers face victimization through arbitrary transfers. These failures not only affect doctors and health workers but also compromise service delivery and patient care across the county.

The health unions insist that immediate solutions are implemented to protect healthcare workers’ rights, safeguard their welfare, and ensure continuity of care for all Kenyans. The message is clear: the dignity, safety, and fair treatment of health workers cannot be ignored, and the public health system cannot be allowed to collapse under administrative neglect.

KMPDU remains committed to standing with members, advocating tirelessly for justice, fair pay, and safe working conditions across the country.
