NAIROBI – September 2, 2025
For the first time, postgraduate training fees for 633 doctors have been officially cleared by the Ministry of Health, a groundbreaking achievement made possible through collective courage, relentless pressure, and principled leadership.
This settlement covers the entire backlog from 2018 to 2024, bringing relief to hundreds of doctors who have borne this financial burden for years.
Behind the Progress
Initially, 420 government-sponsored registrars had their arrears cleared following earlier negotiations.
A backlog then emerged due to a failure to convene the training committee since 2019, compounded by the suspension of sponsorships for critical specializations like obstetrics, paediatrics, surgery, and more. This left many doctors abandoned mid-training.
After the Return-to-Work Formula (RTWF) was signed on May 8, 2024, sustained follow-ups with the Ministry’s Department of Public Health and Professional Standards finally unlocked approvals for an additional 211 doctors in the 2024/25–2025/26 financial years.
As of August 25, 2025, the Ministry has confirmed payments will be settled for all 633 doctors, including those who completed their training without prior sponsorship.
A Union’s Commitment in Action
KMPDU Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah described this achievement as more than a financial fix — it is a reflection of the union’s enduring values.
“Today marks a significant milestone: all postgraduate fees for the period 2018–2024 have been approved for payment, covering a total of 633 doctors… The RTWF of 2024 was about leaving no doctor behind. Our duty as your leaders is to ensure its total implementation. This is a testament to our unity, solidarity, persistence, and resilience.”
Why This Matters
This is not only about clearing debt. It’s a moment that restores equity, professional dignity, and morale, signaling a brighter future for Kenya’s healthcare system.
KMPDU remains vigilant and committed. We will ensure that the Return-to-Work commitments are fully honored, and that no doctor is left behind, regardless of background or specialty.
Congratulations to the 633 doctors whose sacrifices are finally being honored.
