KMPDU and FES Convene Inaugural Gender Workshop to Advance Women’s Leadership in Trade Unionism

NAIROBI: Oct 23, 2026

In a workforce comprising both women and men, ensuring that everyone has a meaningful voice in decisions shaping their professional lives is fundamental to achieving gender equality and strengthening trade union representation.

On Friday, 23 October 2026, the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU), in partnership with Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES), convened its inaugural Gender Workshop to advance women’s voice, leadership, and accountability in trade unionism.

The workshop provided a platform to examine barriers affecting women’s career progression, workplace safety, access to leadership, and participation in union decision-making and collective bargaining.

Addressing Barriers to Women’s Participation and Leadership

Meaningful gender equality in trade unionism requires more than representation. It calls for deliberate efforts to identify and address structural and institutional barriers that may limit women’s participation in leadership and decision-making.

Discussions during the workshop explored challenges affecting women’s professional advancement, their access to leadership opportunities, and the need for safe and equitable working environments. These issues are central to building an inclusive workforce in which professional opportunities and institutional decisions reflect the interests and experiences of all members.

For KMPDU, advancing gender equality means ensuring that women can participate meaningfully in shaping the policies, negotiations, and decisions that affect their careers and working conditions.

Strengthening Women’s Voice in Union Decision-Making

Trade unions play a critical role in representing workers, negotiating employment terms, and advocating for fair working conditions. Ensuring women’s meaningful participation in these processes strengthens the legitimacy and inclusiveness of union representation.

The workshop also examined women’s participation in collective bargaining and union decision-making, highlighting the importance of leadership structures that enable women not only to be represented but also to influence outcomes.

Representation creates an entry point, but meaningful influence requires opportunities to contribute to discussions, shape priorities, participate in negotiations, and hold leadership structures accountable for progress.

Advancing Accountability and Sustainable Progress

The partnership between KMPDU and Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung reflects a collaborative approach to advancing dialogue on gender equality within trade unionism.

Sustained progress requires continued attention to women’s leadership, workplace safety, equitable career progression, and participation in institutional decision-making. Accountability is essential to ensuring that discussions on gender equality translate into meaningful and lasting change.

KMPDU remains committed to strengthening an inclusive union in which every member has a meaningful voice in decisions affecting their professional lives and the future of the organization.

Representation opens the door. Influence shapes decisions. Accountability sustains progress. For KMPDU, meaningful gender equality means ensuring that women are not merely present in the room, but are empowered to help shape the decisions that define their professional futures and the direction of their Union.
