The protection of healthcare professionals extends beyond the workplace. It includes safeguarding their constitutional rights, professional dignity, and the rule of law.
KMPDU today stood in solidarity with Dr. Obwaka, an 80-year-old consultant gynaecologist, following his arrest by state officers from his private clinic and subsequent detention at Muthaiga Police Station. The Union is deeply concerned by reports that the arrest was carried out despite the existence of a valid court order restraining such action.
This incident follows closely on the heels of recent events involving Dr. Iqbal Khandwalla, reinforcing growing concerns about actions that appear to undermine due process and expose healthcare professionals to arbitrary treatment.
KMPDU believes that every doctor, regardless of their position or years of service, is entitled to the full protection of the law. Where allegations exist, they must be addressed through lawful, transparent, and fair legal processes. Court orders must be respected, and the constitutional rights of every citizen upheld without exception.
The Union remains firmly opposed to any actions that intimidate, harass, or unfairly target healthcare professionals while they carry out their duties or pursue their lawful practice. Such actions not only affect individual practitioners but also risk eroding confidence in the institutions responsible for upholding justice and protecting professional independence.
KMPDU will continue to provide legal, professional, and institutional support to members whose rights are threatened. The Union remains committed to ensuring that doctors are treated fairly and that the principles of due process and the rule of law are respected at all times.
Healthcare professionals dedicate their lives to caring for others. They deserve to work and practice in an environment where their rights are protected and where justice is administered fairly and impartially.
KMPDU will continue to stand with its members and advocate for a healthcare system, and a society, founded on justice, accountability, and respect for the law.
