KMPDU Engages Kenyatta National Hospital on Key Human Resource Reforms

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) today held a constructive engagement with the leadership of Kenyatta National Hospital, aimed at advancing critical human resource reforms that directly affect healthcare workers and service delivery.

The courtesy call was led by KMPDU Secretary General Dr Davji Atellah, who met with the Acting Chief Executive Officer of KNH to review progress and secure commitments on long-standing HR concerns.

Key Updates from the Engagement

On staff welfare, the hospital confirmed that it is fast-tracking comprehensive medical cover under the Social Health Authority (SHA) for all staff. In addition, plans are underway to introduce private medical insurance by July 2026, a move expected to significantly enhance access to care and financial protection for healthcare workers and their families.

A major milestone was reached on employment terms. Both parties agreed that the continued reliance on short-term contracts is costly, inefficient, and unsustainable. In this regard, the Acting CEO committed to a transition from contract employment to Permanent and Pensionable (PnP) terms by the end of the current financial year. This shift will improve job security, stabilize the workforce, and strengthen institutional continuity at the country’s largest referral hospital.

KMPDU acknowledges and appreciates the positive reforms initiated under the current hospital leadership and reiterates its commitment to sustained engagement to ensure these commitments are implemented fully and within agreed timelines.

As a union, KMPDU remains steadfast in advocating for dignified employment terms, secure medical cover, and a motivated health workforce, recognizing that these are essential foundations for quality healthcare delivery to Kenyans.

In solidarity.
