Union Organizing: Building a Stronger Medical Workforce Through Union Engagement

Every year, thousands of brilliant, passionate young doctors begin their careers as medical interns, full of potential, yet entering a system that too often overlooks, underpays, or undervalues them.

Many of these doctors navigate the early stages of their careers alone, unaware of the protective power of collective action. Without early union engagement, they risk being isolated in a fragmented system where their rights and welfare are not guaranteed.

At KMPDU, we believe organizing is not optional, it’s essential. Union engagement from the very start of a doctor’s journey is how we build a profession that is not only resilient but empowered to demand better.

We are laying intentional groundwork to:

  • Protect young professionals from exploitation,

  • Empower them to become advocates for ethical labour practices,

  • Improve employer-worker relations, and

  • Champion doctors’ welfare as the foundation of a just healthcare system.

We were honoured to have Joe Simoes, SEIU Global Senior Campaign Coordinator, who spent a few days mentoring some members of the KMPDU secretariat after the recently concluded Annual Delegates Conference (ADC). His insights into grassroots union organizing, member mobilization, and strategic campaigning were invaluable, and we are deeply grateful for his time and solidarity. His presence reaffirmed the global nature of our struggle and our collective power to overcome it.

🌍 Organizing is how we move from surviving to thriving.
From walking alone to standing together. From being unheard to setting the agenda.

Whether you’re a new intern or a seasoned practitioner, you belong in the union. Together, we shape the future of healthcare.
