NAIROBI: SEP 17, 2025
Today marks a historic victory for doctors and the labour movement in Kenya. After seven years of struggle, the second and final batch of the 2017–2024 Basic Salary Arrears has been released. Doctors are already receiving payments in their bank accounts, a moment of justice long overdue.
This achievement crowns the fight for the full implementation of the 2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and the Return-to-Work Formula signed in May 2024. It proves that with unity of purpose and principled leadership, workers can win.
What This Means
Sh3.5 billion in basic salary arrears settled for doctors (2017–2024)
Full implementation of the CBA arrears clause completed
Doctors’ bank accounts credited with long-delayed pay
Trust in dialogue restored through the RTWF commitments
This milestone follows KMPDU’s engagement with H.E. President Dr. William Samoei Ruto in May 2024 at State House, Nairobi. The President committed to resolving arrears within two years and addressing pending CBA issues.
We commend the leadership of:
Hon. Aden Duale – Cabinet Secretary for Health
Mary Muthoni Muriuki, CBS – PS, Public Health & Professional Standards
Dr. Ouma Oluga – PS, Medical Services
Their forthrightness and willingness to embrace dialogue have been critical in delivering this outcome.
This is a victory, but not the end. KMPDU remains focused on securing the 2024–2025 arrear, ensuring all doctors’ payslips reflect the correct salary scale, pushing for the employment of 2,000 more doctos and demanding county governments promote all deserving doctors and provide functional medical cover.
Industrial harmony is non-negotiable, it is the foundation for successful Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
Congratulations to all our members. As you smile to the bank today, remember, this is your victory! It is the fruit of your unity, resilience, and persistence.
Let us now continue serving Kenyans with renewed strength, dignity, and compassion.
Viva KMPDU! Viva Doctors!
