MOMBASA: Oct 10, 2026
The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has engaged Mombasa County health leadership on doctors’ welfare, working conditions and professional development, reaffirming the importance of investing in healthcare professionals to strengthen service delivery.
The discussions were led by KMPDU National Secretary General Dr. Davji Bhimji Atellah and Mombasa Branch Secretary Dr. Ghalib Salim, in a meeting with the leadership of the Mombasa County Department of Health Services.
Advancing Doctors’ Welfare and Professional Development
The engagement focused on issues affecting doctors’ welfare and working conditions, as well as opportunities to support their professional development.
KMPDU maintains that healthcare workers’ welfare is inseparable from the quality and reliability of healthcare services. Doctors need supportive working environments and opportunities for professional growth to deliver effective care and meet the needs of patients across the county.
Continued dialogue between the Union and county leadership remains important in addressing workplace concerns and strengthening the conditions under which doctors serve the public.
The meeting also highlighted KMPDU’s support for Mwezi wa Baba, Mombasa County’s month-long initiative offering free healthcare services across county hospitals. The initiative honours the late Right Honourable Raila Odinga and his vision for Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
KMPDU recognises the importance of initiatives that expand access to healthcare and bring essential services closer to communities. Such efforts must be supported by adequate staffing, appropriate working conditions and sustained investment in the healthcare workforce responsible for delivering these services.
Putting Healthcare Workers at the Centre of UHC
Achieving Universal Health Coverage requires more than expanding access to services. It also calls for deliberate investment in the doctors and other healthcare professionals who make service delivery possible.
KMPDU will continue engaging county governments and other stakeholders to advance doctors’ welfare, promote professional development and support healthcare systems that respond to the needs of patients and healthcare workers alike.

A stronger healthcare system begins with investing in the people who deliver care. Doctors’ welfare and working conditions must remain central to Kenya’s pursuit of Universal Health Coverage.
