KMPDU Nyanza Branch Engages Migori County Offices to Address Doctors’ Welfare and CBA Implementation

MIGORI: Oct 28, 2026

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU), through its Nyanza Branch leadership, has engaged various Migori County Government offices to follow up on individual members’ welfare cases, outstanding remuneration concerns, promotions, and the implementation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

The engagements were led by Branch Secretary Dr. Orwenyo, accompanied by Organizing Secretary Dr. Otucho and Assistant Treasurer Dr. Ogega. The visits focused on resolving individual cases, securing progress on outstanding employment matters, and strengthening collaboration with county departments to safeguard doctors’ rights and welfare.

Representing Members in Disciplinary Proceedings

As part of its commitment to protecting members’ professional interests, the Union represented three members before the Disciplinary Committee in the County Health Management Team (CHMT) Boardroom. The cases concerned service delivery and postgraduate studies.

During the proceedings, the affected members received representation from the Union, which also provided guidance to the Committee on the way forward. Following the presentation of the issues raised, the Committee retreated to deliberate on the matters.

KMPDU continues to emphasise the importance of appropriate representation and fair consideration of matters affecting members’ professional conduct, training, and welfare.

Engagement with County Health Leadership

The Branch leadership also engaged the County Office of Health (CO-H) and the County Director of Health (CDH) to follow up on outstanding CBA obligations and broader workforce concerns.

Settlement of CBA Salary Arrears

The County Health Department pledged to settle accrued basic salary arrears arising from the 2025/2026 CBA before December 2026. The Union will continue to follow up on this commitment to ensure that the outstanding payments are addressed within the indicated timeline.

Promotions and Redesignations

KMPDU acknowledged the progress made by the County in addressing promotions and redesignations, noting that only a few cases remained pending. The Branch leadership urged the Department to resolve the outstanding cases.

Members eligible for redesignation were advised to submit formal requests to the Department’s Human Resource Office to facilitate consideration and processing.

Recruitment of Doctors and Healthcare Workers

The County confirmed that recruitment of doctors and other healthcare workers was ongoing. However, the Union expressed concern that the number of doctors being recruited remained insufficient to meet healthcare service needs.

KMPDU urged the County Government to increase recruitment across all doctor cadres in the next financial year to strengthen staffing capacity and support effective healthcare delivery.

Resolving Payroll Discrepancies and Strengthening Union Membership

Engagements with the Human Resource and Payroll offices yielded progress on several individual welfare matters while providing guidance on cases requiring further documentation.

CBA Salary Adjustments

Three doctors’ cases involving missed basic salary adjustments were resolved. The corresponding arrears, dating back to July 2026, were captured in October 2026 for settlement.

This development represents progress in addressing individual remuneration discrepancies and ensuring that eligible members receive the adjustments due to them under the applicable CBA.

Unpaid Salaries Relating to the 2020 Strike

Members with outstanding salary payments relating to the 2020 strike were advised to submit written requests to the Human Resource Office, specifying the months for which salaries remain unpaid. This documentation will facilitate verification and support efforts towards settlement.

Non-Practice and Extraneous Allowance Discrepancies

Members affected by incorrect adjustments to non-practice and extraneous allowances following promotions were advised to submit formal requests to the Human Resource Office. The requests should identify the affected months and include relevant payslips to facilitate verification, correction, and settlement.

Growing Union Membership

The engagements also resulted in the recruitment of seven additional eligible members into the Union, strengthening collective representation and KMPDU’s capacity to advocate for doctors’ employment rights and welfare.

Sustaining Follow-Up on CBA Implementation

KMPDU Nyanza Branch leadership looks forward to the November meeting of the Migori CBA Implementation and Monitoring Committee to pursue outstanding matters relating to CBA implementation and members’ welfare.

The Union will continue engaging the County Government to follow through on commitments, resolve pending individual cases, address staffing concerns, and ensure that negotiated employment terms are implemented effectively.

These engagements reaffirm KMPDU’s commitment to representing its members, protecting their professional dignity, and pursuing practical solutions to employment challenges through structured dialogue and accountability.

In solidarity,

Dr. Orwenyo
Secretary, KMPDU Nyanza Branch
