NAIROBI – August 27, 2025
For the first time in Kenya’s history, medical interns have received their salaries in the very first month of internship. After decades of “work first, we’ll pay later,” that exploitative chorus has finally been silenced! Never again should young doctors be asked to sacrifice their labour without dignity or recognition.
This milestone is more than just a financial shift, it is a historic correction. For too long, interns poured their sweat into a system that deferred their pay, disregarded their rights, and eroded morale. Today, their work is being recognized from day one.
At the heart of this change is the leadership of:
Hon. Aden Duale, Cabinet Secretary for Health
Mary Muthoni Muriuki, CBS, Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards
Dr. Ouma Oluga, Principal Secretary for Medical Services
Through their stewardship, interns’ labour is finally being honored with the dignity it deserves, setting a precedent for fairness and professionalism in Kenya’s healthcare system.
This is not just a policy win, it is a new chapter for Kenya’s doctors and for the future of healthcare delivery in the country.
