The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) today held a consultative engagement with the Kisumu County Government, led by Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o, to deliberate on key human resource issues affecting medical practitioners and the future of healthcare delivery in the county.
The meeting brought together national and regional KMPDU leadership, led by Dr Davji Atellah, alongside the Union’s Nyanza Branch Chairman Dr Onyango Ndonga. Discussions centered on workforce considerations that directly influence the quality, safety, and sustainability of healthcare services.
The Governor reaffirmed the County Government’s commitment to offering the highest possible standard of healthcare and underscored the importance of continuous consultation with the Union as a core mechanism for addressing workforce matters. KMPDU welcomed this affirmation, noting that structured engagement is essential for resolving long-standing issues and preventing unnecessary industrial disputes.
A key focus of the engagement was the elevation of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital to Level Six national referral status. The County Government outlined its deliberate approach to consolidating service delivery across County and Sub-County facilities to ensure continuity, quality, and equity of care during and after the transition. KMPDU acknowledged the elevation and noted the County’s consistency in meeting monthly remuneration obligations, which is critical for workforce stability.

Issues relating to career progression and promotions were also raised. The County leadership indicated that these matters will continue to be addressed within established institutional, fiscal, and policy frameworks. KMPDU reiterated the need for timely and transparent implementation to prevent stagnation and demoralization of doctors.
The Union appreciates the County Government’s recognition of the indispensable role played by medical practitioners and healthcare workers in achieving positive health outcomes for the people of Kisumu. Present during the engagement were the County Secretary Hesbon Hongo and the CECM for Health Dr Gregory Ganda.
KMPDU remains committed to sustained, good-faith engagement to ensure that commitments translate into tangible improvements in doctors’ welfare and strengthened healthcare delivery across Kisumu County.
In solidarity.
