The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) held a consultative engagement with the Management of Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), led by Ag. CEO Dr. Richard Lesiyampe, to initiate structured implementation discussions on labour, training, and health system priorities aligned to the resolutions of the 10th Annual Delegates Conference (ADC).
The meeting marked the first formal step in translating ADC resolutions into actionable institutional reforms at KNH, with a clear focus on workforce welfare, training advancement, and system strengthening.
Implementation Framework
1. Permanent and Pensionable (PNP) Transition
Discussions confirmed the planned conversion of doctors and medical assistants currently on contract to Permanent and Pensionable terms, effective 1st July 2026.
The transition framework includes pension remittances and continuation of comprehensive medical insurance coverage.
2. CBA 2025–2029 Negotiations
Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations for the 2025–2029 cycle are set to commence next week under a structured 60-day negotiation framework.
KMPDU is expected to submit its initial technical response by Thursday, marking the formal start of the bargaining process.
3. Specialist Training and Capacity Building
The hospital committed to expanding specialist training through the establishment of 15 Centres of Excellence and 10 Fellowship programmes.
The framework also includes the introduction of pro-rata remuneration for doctors in training, aimed at strengthening retention and professional development.
4. Facility Modernisation and Digital Health
KNH is progressing toward a 65% paperless clinical environment, alongside revitalisation of the Dental Unit.
Key diagnostic and clinical equipment is already reported to be in transit to support this modernization agenda.
5. Accountability and Implementation Oversight
A joint review meeting has been scheduled for June to assess implementation readiness ahead of the July transition milestones.
This is intended to ensure compliance, alignment, and timely delivery of agreed commitments.
Ongoing Engagement
The engagement framework will continue through quarterly technical meetings and annual consultative forums, ensuring sustained dialogue between KMPDU and KNH management.
Implementation of the ADC resolutions remains ongoing, with both parties committing to structured follow-up and measurable progress.
