KMPDU has strongly condemned the interdiction of the Chief Executive Officer of Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital (CGTRH), Dr. Iqbal Khandwalla, describing the action as a serious breach of due process and a troubling example of political interference in the management of public health institutions.
The Union is deeply concerned that the interdiction was reportedly effected without the issuance of a mandatory Show Cause Letter or affording Dr. Khandwalla an opportunity to respond to the allegations against him. Such actions undermine the principles of natural justice, procedural fairness, and good governance that should guide all public sector disciplinary processes.
KMPDU believes the decision shifts attention away from longstanding systemic challenges within the county’s health sector by placing responsibility on an individual through what appears to be an irregular administrative process. Addressing institutional weaknesses requires accountability, transparency, and evidence-based decision-making, not actions that compromise professional independence.
The Union maintains that healthcare institutions must be protected from political interference to preserve professional integrity and ensure continuity in the delivery of quality healthcare services. Public confidence in health leadership depends on fair, lawful, and transparent administrative processes that respect the rights of healthcare professionals.
KMPDU has called upon the County Government of Mombasa to urgently review the circumstances surrounding the interdiction and uphold due process in handling the matter. The Union further warns that failure to address these concerns within seven days will leave it with no option but to pursue industrial action in defence of its members and the principles of fair labour practice.
KMPDU remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting healthcare professionals from arbitrary administrative action and will continue to advocate for accountability, professional independence, and respect for the rule of law within Kenya’s health sector.
