KMPDU remains committed to constructive engagement in resolving the challenges facing doctors in Meru County. Following a consultative meeting on 25 February and an intensive five-hour engagement with the Meru County Government on 26 February, the Union has reiterated its readiness to work with the County to find lasting solutions.
While discussions are set to continue, KMPDU’s position remains unequivocal: dialogue must lead to implementation. Doctors have waited long enough, and further delays on critical labour issues are no longer acceptable.
At the centre of the ongoing discussions are four longstanding concerns that directly affect the welfare of doctors and the quality of healthcare services in the county. Delayed promotions continue to deny doctors fair career progression and professional recognition. The continued denial of study leave limits opportunities for postgraduate training and the development of specialist services, ultimately affecting patient care. The Union is also demanding the conversion of all doctors serving on contract to Permanent and Pensionable terms in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, while calling for urgent recruitment to address the critical shortage of doctors that continues to place immense pressure on the existing workforce.
These are not merely employment concerns. They are issues that determine whether doctors can work effectively and whether the people of Meru can access safe, timely, and quality healthcare.
The 14-day strike notice issued by KMPDU on 20 February is steadily drawing to a close. Unless these four issues are fully resolved, the Union will commence a full industrial strike on 6 March 2026.

KMPDU remains open to meaningful dialogue and welcomes every genuine effort toward resolving the dispute. However, engagement must produce measurable outcomes. Commitments must be honoured, timelines respected, and agreements implemented.
The people of Meru deserve a healthcare system that functions effectively, and that begins with ensuring doctors are treated fairly, supported professionally, and equipped to deliver quality care.
KMPDU remains steadfast in defending the dignity, welfare, and rights of doctors. Together, we are stronger.
