The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) was proudly represented at the 114th Session of the International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva, Switzerland, by Secretary General Davji Bhimji Atellah and Chairman Abidan Mwachi.
Held under the theme “Advancing Social Justice, Promoting Decent Work,” the conference brought together worker, employer, and government representatives from 187 member states to engage in dialogue on some of the most significant issues shaping the future of work globally.
Organized by the International Labour Organization, the International Labour Conference serves as the world’s premier forum for setting international labour standards and advancing policies that promote workers’ rights, social protection, and inclusive economic development.
This year’s discussions focused on critical issues affecting workers across sectors and regions, including the promotion of decent work within the platform economy, strengthening social dialogue and tripartite cooperation, and advancing gender equality and inclusion in the workplace. These conversations are particularly relevant as countries continue to navigate evolving labour markets, technological transformation, and changing workforce dynamics.
KMPDU’s participation provides an important opportunity to contribute Kenya’s experiences and perspectives on labour relations, healthcare workforce management, collective bargaining, and worker welfare. It also offers a platform to learn from international best practices and engage with labour leaders, policymakers, and worker organizations from around the world.
As the representative body for doctors in Kenya, KMPDU recognizes that many of the challenges affecting healthcare workers are part of broader global conversations about fair employment, worker protections, social security, occupational safety, and the right to dignified work. Strengthening international solidarity and exchanging ideas with labour movements worldwide remains essential in advancing these goals.
The Union remains committed to championing decent work, fair labour standards, strong public health systems, and social justice for healthcare workers and all working people. These principles are fundamental not only to protecting workers’ rights but also to building equitable, resilient, and inclusive societies.
KMPDU looks forward to contributing to discussions that will help shape the future of work while strengthening partnerships and solidarity across the global labour movement.
The pursuit of decent work and social justice is a shared responsibility—and a shared future.
