The 2024 KMPDU Special Delegates Conference, attended by over 600 doctors, marked a turning point in the union’s advocacy efforts. On 30th November 2024, the delegates unanimously ratified industrial action, signaling the union’s resolve to address persistent injustices in the healthcare sector. This decision mandates the National Advisory Council to issue an official strike notice on Monday, 2nd December 2024, to both National and County governments.
The strike action is a call to enforce the implementation of the Return to Work Formula (RTWF) signed on 8th May 2024, a critical agreement that remains unfulfilled. Doctors are also demanding the immediate release of long-overdue Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) arrears, along with the payment of medical interns in accordance with the CBA. These unresolved issues highlight the deep-seated challenges faced by healthcare workers across the country.
This momentous decision underscores the KMPDU’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of its members. With industrial action looming, the union sends a powerful message to the authorities: the time for empty promises has passed, and immediate action is necessary to ensure fairness, dignity, and equity within Kenya’s healthcare system.
