KMPDU Western Branch AGM: Wins in Busia and Vihiga, Crisis in Kakamega

May 04, 2025

The KMPDU Western Branch Annual General Meeting was a spirited and action-focused session that reflected both progress and persistent injustice. Doctors in Busia and Vihiga celebrated significant milestones, including full promotions and the long-overdue transition to permanent and pensionable terms. These victories are a direct outcome of sustained union pressure and the unwavering determination of doctors in the region.

However, the situation in Kakamega remains dire. Doctors there have been on strike for over 20 days, with no promotions in more than seven years, no medical cover, and locum doctors earning just KSh 50,000—less than a third of what is stipulated in the CBA. The county lacks a functioning County Public Service Board, and leadership continues to ignore calls for dialogue. The AGM has resolved to fully withdraw services in the county until these violations are addressed. Meanwhile, doctors in Bungoma are still awaiting resolutions to long-standing grievances.

As we approach the Annual Delegates Conference, counties are reminded that all outstanding 2024 RTWF and CBA issues must be resolved without delay. The union remains committed to securing justice for all doctors. We will not relent until every county honors its obligations to the healthcare workers at the frontline of service delivery.
