Meru Doctors’ Strike Called Off Following Successful Negotiations and Return to Work Agreement

MERU – July 17, 2026

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has officially called off the doctors’ strike in Meru County following successful negotiations with the County Government and the signing of a Return to Work Agreement (RTWA).

The agreement marks a significant breakthrough in addressing key concerns that had prompted industrial action and reaffirms the value of dialogue and good-faith engagement in resolving labour disputes within the health sector.

Among the major gains secured through the agreement is the County Government’s commitment to recruit additional doctors to strengthen the health workforce and reduce the workload currently borne by existing staff. The agreement also provides for the implementation of long-overdue promotions, addressing a longstanding concern among doctors regarding career progression and professional growth.

These commitments represent an important step toward improving doctors’ welfare, enhancing motivation within the workforce, and strengthening healthcare service delivery across Meru County. Adequate staffing and timely career progression remain critical pillars in building a resilient health system capable of meeting the healthcare needs of the population.

KMPDU acknowledges the constructive approach demonstrated during the negotiations and appreciates the willingness of all parties to work towards a mutually beneficial resolution. The Union remains committed to ensuring that the gains achieved through the agreement translate into tangible improvements for doctors and the healthcare system.

As doctors resume their duties, KMPDU will continue to closely monitor the implementation of all provisions contained in the Return to Work Agreement to ensure that every commitment is honoured fully and within the agreed timelines.

The resolution of the dispute paves the way for the restoration of normal services and renewed focus on delivering quality, accessible, and timely healthcare to the people of Meru County.

KMPDU remains steadfast in its mission to protect doctors’ welfare while advancing stronger health systems for all Kenyans.

In solidarity.
