Mombasa Doctors’ Strike Called Off Following Landmark Agreement

KMPDU has officially called off the Mombasa doctors’ strike following the successful conclusion of negotiations with the County Government of Mombasa. The agreement, reached after engagements led by H.E. Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir, marks a significant step toward addressing longstanding concerns affecting doctors in the county.

The resolution demonstrates the value of constructive dialogue in resolving labour disputes while safeguarding the welfare of healthcare workers and ensuring continuity of healthcare services.

A key outcome of the agreement is the implementation of long-overdue promotions across multiple job groups. Fifteen doctors will immediately receive promotion letters from Job Group M to N. Promotions from Job Group N to P, affecting 33 doctors, will take effect on 1 April 2026. Seventy-eight doctors in Job Group P will be promoted to Job Group Q in two phases, with the first 39 taking effect on 1 April 2026 and the remaining 39 on 1 July 2026. Seventeen doctors will be promoted from Job Group Q to R effective 1 April 2026, while four doctors will advance from Job Group R to S by 1 July 2026.

The agreement also secures the transition of 64 doctors currently serving on contract to Permanent and Pensionable terms, effective 1 June 2026. This milestone strengthens job security and reflects the County’s commitment to implementing fair employment practices in line with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

On the issue of statutory deductions, the County Government has committed to clearing all outstanding deductions by 1 September 2026, addressing a matter that has caused significant financial hardship for many doctors.

The parties further agreed on important administrative safeguards to protect professional independence within the health sector. The agreement provides for the cessation of political interference in medical operations, while the interdiction of the Chief Executive Officer of Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital has been lifted pending determination of the matter before the Employment and Labour Relations Court.

These commitments represent important progress for doctors in Mombasa and reaffirm the principle that sustained engagement, collective action, and good-faith negotiations can deliver meaningful outcomes for healthcare workers.

KMPDU will closely monitor the implementation of every commitment and continue engaging the County Government to ensure that agreed timelines are honoured. The Union remains committed to defending the welfare, dignity, and professional rights of doctors while advocating for a healthcare system built on fairness, accountability, and respect for healthcare professionals.

With this agreement in place, doctors in Mombasa can now return to serving patients with the assurance that significant steps have been taken toward resolving longstanding labour concerns. KMPDU remains steadfast in ensuring that these commitments are fully implemented and that the gains achieved translate into lasting improvements for doctors and the healthcare system.
