Victory for Doctors as Embu County Delivers Long-Awaited Promotions and Permanent Employment

Persistence, unity, and collective action have once again delivered meaningful progress for doctors. KMPDU is pleased to announce a major milestone in Embu County, where long-overdue promotions have finally been implemented, marking a significant victory for doctors who have waited years for career progression and recognition.

A total of 19 consultants have now been promoted, bringing to fruition a journey that began years ago. For many, these promotions represent more than a change in job title. They are recognition of professional growth, dedication to service, and the principle that merit should be rewarded.

The road to this achievement was not easy. In 2021, as promotions were being implemented in other counties, doctors in Embu remained stagnant despite their continued service. KMPDU remained steadfast, pursuing the matter through sustained engagement, strategic advocacy, media engagement, and industrial action. The most recent action, held in December 2025, reinforced the Union’s determination to ensure that the legitimate concerns of its members could no longer be ignored.

Today, those efforts have produced tangible results. More than 80 percent of doctors in Embu County have now been promoted through three successive batches. In addition, doctors serving on contract have been successfully transitioned to Permanent and Pensionable terms, providing greater job security and stability. The County has also committed to employing more doctors, an important step toward strengthening healthcare services for the people of Embu.

This achievement belongs to every KMPDU member in Embu who remained united throughout the journey. Their patience, resilience, and trust in the Union’s collective approach made this outcome possible. It is a reminder that meaningful change is achieved when healthcare workers stand together behind a common purpose.

KMPDU also recognizes the leadership demonstrated by the Embu Branch under the guidance of Deputy Secretary General Dr. Idan Miskellah. Despite facing an unjust termination, Dr. Miskellah remained unwavering in defending the rights of doctors. His reinstatement, promotion to his rightful job group, and the ongoing process to secure his outstanding arrears reflect the importance of standing firm in the pursuit of justice and fairness.

While this milestone is worth celebrating, KMPDU’s work continues. The Union remains committed to ensuring that every doctor receives fair career progression, equitable employment terms, and dignified working conditions. Our objective remains unchanged: no doctor should be left behind.

The Embu experience is yet another demonstration of what can be achieved through solidarity, perseverance, and principled advocacy. As KMPDU continues engaging counties across Kenya, the Union remains steadfast in its mission to protect the welfare of doctors, strengthen the healthcare workforce, and build a health system that works for both healthcare professionals and the patients they serve.

Together, we are stronger. Together, we continue to deliver lasting change.
