ACCRA: November 20, 2025
KMPDU was honoured to represent Kenyan doctors at the 14th PSI Regional Conference for Africa & Arab Countries (AFRECON 2025) in Accra, Ghana, a gathering that brought together more than 400 union leaders from 82 unions across 34 countries. In attendance on behalf of Kenya’s medical professionals were KMPDU Secretary General Dr. Davji Bhimji Atellah and National Treasurer Dr. Mercy Nabwire.
AFRECON is a continental forum where unions confront shared challenges, define collective strategies, and reaffirm the importance of strong public systems in delivering dignified lives for all citizens. At a time when African health workers face chronic understaffing, wage stagnation, unsafe working environments, and inadequate funding of public health sectors, this platform is vital for building the alliances needed to advance workers’ rights.
KMPDU’s participation in AFRECON reinforces a core principle; that the welfare, protection, and motivation of healthcare workers directly determine the quality and resilience of healthcare delivery. As we continue pushing for the full implementation of the 2017–2021 CBA, ending casualization of labour, improving staffing norms, and ensuring proper remuneration and safety for all doctors, our international solidarity strengthens our resolve and expands our collective voice.
KMPDU shared its Kenyan experiences, from negotiations and policy dialogue to sit-ins, demonstrations, and industrial action, highlighting the union’s role in defending fair labour practices and championing sustainable investment in public health. These reflections resonated with other unions navigating similar struggles, underscoring the importance of coordinated regional action.

As we stand with workers across Africa, KMPDU remains committed to elevating the dignity of Kenyan doctors, promoting healthy and safe workplaces, and advocating for well-resourced, publicly funded healthcare systems.
Leadership is service. Solidarity is power. And health systems thrive when those who sustain them are protected, respected, and heard.
