Kisii Doctors Reaffirm Unity as KMPDU Charts the Next Phase of Advocacy

KMPDU convened a successful Doctors’ Kamkunji in Kisii County, bringing together consultants, medical officers, and interns for an open and engaging discussion on the progress made, the challenges that remain, and the Union’s priorities moving forward.

The meeting provided an opportunity to reflect on the milestones achieved through collective action over the past few years. Through unity and sustained advocacy, doctors in Kisii have secured significant gains, including promotions, approval of study leave, payment of salary arrears, reduction of University of Nairobi postgraduate fees, recruitment of additional doctors, and the introduction of stipends for registrars. These achievements demonstrate the impact of organized engagement and the strength of a united profession.

Despite this progress, members highlighted several issues that require urgent attention. Doctors called for the harmonization of locum rates to align with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) scale and emphasized the need to prioritize the employment of colleagues who continue to serve on locum terms. Addressing these concerns remains essential to promoting fairness, improving workforce stability, and strengthening healthcare delivery.

The Union also reaffirmed its national priorities, including the implementation of the agreed basic salary adjustments, payment of the remaining 2024/2025 salary arrears, and the successful negotiation of a fair and progressive 2025-2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The Kisii Kamkunji reinforced a simple but enduring truth: meaningful progress is achieved when doctors speak with one voice. KMPDU remains committed to engaging members, advocating for better working conditions, and ensuring that every agreement reached is fully implemented.

Together, we continue to build a stronger profession, a stronger Union, and a stronger healthcare system. When doctors stand together, progress is inevitable.
