KMPDU and Trans Nzoia County Reach Agreement, Averting Industrial Action

KMPDU has successfully concluded negotiations with the County Government of Trans Nzoia, resulting in a comprehensive agreement that addresses several longstanding concerns affecting doctors in the county. The agreement follows the strike notice issued on 4 February 2026 and sustained engagements led by H.E. Governor George Natembeya.

The outcome reflects the value of constructive dialogue, good-faith negotiations, and the collective resolve of doctors to secure fair labour practices while safeguarding healthcare services.

A key milestone in the agreement is the commitment to implement pending promotions across multiple job groups. The County Government has agreed to promote 22 doctors from Job Group N to Job Group P by 17 March 2026. Doctors in Job Group P who have already undergone interviews for promotion to Job Group Q will also receive their promotions by the same date. In addition, all outstanding promotions in Job Groups Q, R, and S will be finalized within 90 days from 17 February 2026, with every promotion accompanied by the corresponding salary adjustments.

The agreement also delivers greater job security for doctors serving on contract. The County has committed to converting 12 doctors from contractual employment to Permanent and Pensionable terms by 31 March 2026, in line with KMPDU’s continued advocacy for fair and secure employment.

On healthcare benefits, the County Government has assured doctors that the current medical insurance cover will remain in force while arrangements are made to procure a new comprehensive medical scheme before the existing cover expires. This commitment is intended to ensure uninterrupted access to healthcare for doctors and their dependants.

This agreement marks important progress in addressing issues that directly affect doctors’ welfare, career progression, and working conditions. It also demonstrates that meaningful outcomes can be achieved through structured engagement backed by the unity and solidarity of KMPDU members.

As implementation begins, KMPDU will closely monitor every commitment to ensure that agreed timelines are honoured and that all resolutions are fully implemented. The Union remains committed to holding all parties accountable while continuing to advocate for the rights, dignity, and professional welfare of doctors across the country.

Every agreement implemented strengthens the profession, improves working conditions, and contributes to a stronger healthcare system for the people of Kenya.
